SWIM STANDARDS
SWIM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR SQUAD SELECTION & HS VARSITY SWIM TEAM IN SEASON 2
ES Squad 1
Correct Freestyle- Can complete 25m continuous consistent kicking, straight legs, kicking from the hips, arms high elbow recovery
No catch up/arms in opposition.
Correct backstroke- Streamline body on back, continuous arms stroke, continuous kicking.
Breaststroke- Can demonstrate correct kick and timing (Flexed feet) breathe, kick and glide.
Butterfly- Can dolphin kick legal (pointed toes), hip undulation.
Other skills- Streamlining, drop starts & dive from the blocks
ES SQUAD 2
Freestyle- Can swim keeping technique for 25m. High elbow recovery, relaxed catch, pull and push through. Continuous kicking straight legs from hips.
Backstroke- proper technique for 25m. Can keep streamline body position. Correct backstroke continuous Rhythm not catch up
Breaststroke- Correct Rhythm with arm stroke, correct timing, correct kicking flexed feet, open turns
Butterfly- Can do 25m correct arms and kicking, can dolphin kick with legs together 25m. Hip undulation
Other skills- streamline, flip turns, dive & drop starts
ES SQUAD 3
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 50m
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m (correct Rhythm, pulling under chest, whip kick, gliding)
Butterfly- Can do 25m correct arms and kicking, legal stroke, timing
Other skills- streamline, flip turns, dive & drop starts
ES SQUAD 4
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 50m (high elbow recovery, relaxed arms on catch, no crossover catch, pull and push through finish)
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m (Streamline body position, continuous kicking from hips, no knees out of the water, continuous arm stroke straight arm recovery)
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m (whip kicking, pull under chest)
Butterfly- Can do 50m proper technique
Other skills- Dive, drop start, streamline, open turns & flip turns
MS SQUAD 5
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 50m
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m
Butterfly- Can do 25m correct arms and kicking,, hip undulation, proper kick, legal butterfly.
Other skills- Drop start, streamline, flip turns & dive from the blocks
MS SQUAD 6
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 100m
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m
Butterfly- Can do 50m proper technique
Other skills- Dive, drop start, streamline, flip turns
SQUAD 7
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 100m (50m under 48 secs/100m under 1min.40)
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m (50m under 50 secs/100m under 1min.50)
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m (50m under 55 secs/100m under 2min)
Butterfly- 50m proper technique (50m under 50 secs)
Other skills- Dive, drop start, streamline, flip turns, starts, streamline kick on back 100m,
freestyle sculling with head up.
SQUAD 8
Freestyle- Swim proper technique 100m (50m under 38 secs/100m under 1min.30)
Backstroke- Swim proper technique 50m (50m under 45secs/100m under 1min.40)
Breaststroke- Swim proper technique 50m (50m under 55/100m under 2min.)
Butterfly- 100m proper technique (50m under 50 secs)
Other skills- Dive, drop start, streamline, flip turns, starts, streamline kick on back 100m
Butterfly- kick on back 100m, sculling (different types)
SQUAD 9 - HS VARSITY (season 2) See required times in stroke tables below along with must see skills listed:
**Must be able to meet times of 8 events from the lists provided in tables below.
IASAS Team will be based on the fastest times. 12 boys and 12 girls for IASAS finals.
Must see elements for strokes:
Freestyle

Out of water arm recovery preferably high elbow.
Middle finger catch
Breathing sideways.
Body roll
Backstroke
Streamline body
Continuous kicking from hips knees under water. Toes breaking surface

Whip kick with feet flexed
Arms: out-sweep, in-sweep, recovery.
Arms push back vertical plane chest level.
Has correct timing, pull breathe kick glide.
Butterfly
Can streamline dolphin kick
Undulation kicking from the hips.
Arms pull down push outside body line.
Side arm recovery properly.
Shoulder line catch properly.
