Tryouts criteria and skills checklist

Grade 1 students are not allowed to tryouts. We recommend that they will sign up for the stroke development after school activities

ES students (Grades 2 - 4) must be able to swim 25m with confidence and demonstrate basic technique in all 4 competitive strokes as listed below.

MS/HS students must be able to swim 50m with confidence and demonstrate basic technique in all 4 competitive strokes as listed below.

Freestyle

1. Demonstrate continuous flutter kick.

2. Straight arm or high elbow arm recovery. 

3. Can breathe comfortably to the side without lifting the head. 

4. Can finish required distance without stopping

Backstroke

1. Demonstrate continuous kick on their back (soft knees, floppy feet) 

2. High hips. 

3. Straight arms recovery. 

4. Can finish required distance without stopping

Breaststroke

1. Can demonstrate the legal Breastroke form (flex feet, outsweep/insweep of the arms) 

2. Demonstrate the proper timing of the pull, kick and breathe 

3. Can finish required distance without stopping

Butterfly

1.  Can demonstrate undulation. 

2. Movement should come from the hips and not from the knees

3. Straight arms recovery at the same time. 

4. Demonstrate the proper timing of the pull, kick and breathe.

5. Can finish the required distance without stopping.
